Marble has been around since ancient greek times and in fact, the use of the word 'marble' was derived from those times. Marble itself is a product of the metamorphism of, most often than not, limestone or dolomite rock. White marble is the result of metamorphism of silicate poor limestone. The various swirls of marble varieties are usually due to various mineral impurities such as silt or clay and which were originally present as layers within the limestone.
Italy still leads the way with marble export and followed by Spain, Portugal, India and China. The characteristics of marble meant that it was used widely in sculptures and also construction. It has a lower resistance to shattering and also, the way that light penetrates the surface, gives it its dull silky look and appearance. Marble is also capable of looking stunning once polished. It is said that the Taj Mahal in India is made entirely from marble! In fact many famous sculptures and landmarks are made or carved from marble.
Today we see a lot of companies using marble as a product in various sizes either for large areas such as worktops or smaller sizes for flooring and walls or as metro tiles and mosaics. Marble has such unique and beautiful characteristics that each piece is slightly different and it is that unique quality that separates it from entirely man made products. The ribbons and veins and shading range from piece to piece. Just beautiful in its appearance and also luxurious to the touch.
